Believe it or not as humans we have choices. Whether it be as simple as if you will tie your hair back or more complex as to whether or not you will take that new job. It's choice, a decision to get up, to get dressed, to show up to class and rehearse, to wear those heels, to wear flats, to not wear make-up or to get your lashes done. All choices.
Did you know that stress is also a choice? You have a choice to choose stress to choose to worry and focus on all the short comings and fill your head with the clutter of "what isn't" or not. You can choose not to be stressed - to just get on with it and get it done. Avoidance doesn't make it easier either - it will only linger and make it seem worse. Face your fears they say, we say, but have you lately? When was the last time you truly approached something that scared you with the hell raiser attitude you like to portray to that friend you are encouraging to face theirs?
I often talk to new dancers/performers about the choice of stress and worry. I see it like this we can choose to fill our head with the negative, to fill our minds with so much noise that we can't see past it to focus on what needs to be done. That it becomes all consuming and draining. OR we can choose to engage in the task at hand and brush those thoughts aside. Then we can truly see the task ahead of us. You've heard it, we've all heard it " can't see the wood for the trees" That's stress. It stops us from focusing on what is really at play and causing us misery. Well news for you - STRESS DOES NOT OWN YOU! You are the boss of you, the boss of your thoughts - good, bad or indifferent. It takes time and real effort but it's doable. One day at a time, one thought at a time.
So next time you find yourself panicking and dwelling on all the things going wrong, take a moment to acknowledge all the things that went right. Use that inner voice to speak with kindness and clarity - be appreciative of your successes and know that perfection is not real. IT DOESN'T EXIST. All that anyone ever expects from you is your best, at any given time that is all you can expect from you too - your best at that moment. Write a list, make a note of the things you want to work on - but make them bite sized and snack often, with breaks to digest in between. All of a sudden you just tackled mount Everest and you didn't even run out of breath.
